Simmons update

Simmons Insights training sessions are being held online through the month of July.   To learn more, sign up for a training on the new platform here. https://attendee.gototraining.com/rt/1219351090153058050

From our E-Resources Librarian (modified by me): Simmons Insights will eventually replace Simmons OneView. Corporate clients are already using it, but the older data that universities purchase has not been ingested into it yet. The latest update available to our representative is that academic clients will migrate to the new platform before the end of the calendar year, preferably before the end of this Summer/Fall semesters begin.

Welcome Back! Fall 2017

From:     Cathy Michael, Communication and Legal Studies Librarian
Re:          Welcome Back!  Fall 2017

Dear Faculty:

Here are some updates along with some of the usual news:

IMPORTANT: please read

  • LIBRARY SYSTEM CHANGES: This summer the library has been working on replacing Voyager, the system that controls our inventory, ordering, and loans. Our current system will go down this Friday, August 11th.  Our go-live date for Alma, the new system, is August 24th. You may notice some small changes to Argos, the library’s search engine, but for the most part this change will be invisible to users. Be aware that there may be delays in processing and ordering items for the rest of August. Reserves may be processed more slowly than usual as we have to wait to get the new system up and running, and item statuses may not be correct (for example, items that appear to be in the library may in fact be checked out). We hope everything will be back to normal by the beginning of classes, but it is possible there will be some backlogs or other complications, so please bear with us while we complete the switch. If you have any questions about the change, how it might impact you, or have specific questions about ordering or reserves during this time, please email me.
  • ICSM Faculty:  If you are teaching an ICSM course this Fall I’m booking sessions.  Based on feedback from the ICSM workshop in May, all librarians will be teaching a standard program that focuses on library student learning objectives (SLOs) for search strategies.  We can add a second instruction session later in the semester for more in depth searching (open search session, researching for an assignment, etc.) I’ll send those of you on my list a separate email with additional details.

LIBRARY INSTRUCTION
Book a library instruction session for your class. Instruction sessions can be arranged at any time over the course of the semester; they are most effective after students have research topics. I can demonstrate our databases and search techniques and / or have a research session where I’m available to answer specific research questions. The format is flexible and can include a hands-on assignment.  The duration is also flexible — I’ve visited classes  ranging from 15 minutes to 90 minutes. There are two ways to accomplish this: 1) send me an email with the where and when of the class visit along, or 2) fill out the following form: Request for Library Instruction.

Research Guides for Sakai or your course website
Here is a Complete List of the Guides I’ve created.  Consider adding one to your Sakai page.   Contact me if you would like a Research Guide for your class — this can be for a production class.  This can be done even if you do not have class time for a library instruction session.

Given the concern over “fake news”,  take a look at our guide on Evaluating Resources.  You can assign a quizz on this topic to reinforce the lesson to emphasize and develop critical thinking skills.  Evaluating Resources is a part of our Research 101 skills series.

DATABASES:

FY 17-18 BOOKS AND VIDEOS
Our budget dates for spending are:

  • 25% by Sept 1
  • 50% by Nov 1
  • 75% by Feb 1
  • 100% by March 15th

For a list of suggested titles or figures on funds remaining, contact me (note: I had my first introduction to searching funds on the new system today– there may be some delays with that).

New Title Listhere is a monthly list of  all new book titles (all subject areas) that is always available on the library homepage.  On the Film tab of the library’s homepage is a link to new Films.

E-RESERVES
The library uses Sakai for E-reserves.   Ben Hogben, Access Services Manager, put together a guide on Course Reserves in Sakai to get you started:  http://www.ithacalibrary.com/sp/subjects/Sakai  You can do it yourself, or, our Access Services Department can assist you.  If you have any questions, contact me or  Shianne (Reserves Coordinator, 2nd shift), Ben (Access Services Manager) or Scott Fish (Multimedia Reserves).  Note that it takes 24 hours for materials placed on Reserves to appear in ARGOS.

Handy links:
Reserves   Use this page to place all types of media on Reserves (audio,  journal articles and book chapters, book or score, and video clips).
Multimedia Request   If you would like to show a library video on a particular date, use this form to book a film for class.

HELP!
Need help? Here are some common Q&As that may assist you. Always feel free to contact me with questions: cmichael@ithaca.edu    I’m in the second cubicle to the right as you enter the library.  My phone number is: 4-1293.  Stop by if you’re in the library.

Library news: Spring into Summer 2017

Hope everyone has a great semester.  Stop by to say hello if you’re in the library. — Cathy

Communication Studies
Greetings to the Communication Studies faculty.  With the retirement of Dr. Saunders, I will serve as your library liaison.  I know some of you from my work with Culture and Communications or with Legal Studies.  I look forward to getting to know you and your students.   I’ll post a general notice, such as this, at the beginning and end of each semester.  During the semester, I’ll email you with any important news concerning library resources and services.

Digital Commons @ IC
The Digital Commons
is the library’s platform that supports the creative and scholarly output of our campus.   With your consent, I’ll add your content to our interface as a summer project.  If interested, please send me your C.V.  For more information, refer to our Digital Commons @ IC guide.

FY 2016-2017 ACQUISITIONS
Attached is a list of titles ordered and received from 6/1/16 to present.

NEW ACQUISITIONS FY 16-17 FINAL (click to open in Google Docs) [update pending 5/5/17]

These are titles that have been ordered on the following funds: culture & communication, video funds, journalism, legal studies, IMC, CMD & TVR.  Some funds are posted as ebooks if an ebook is selected.

Please be sure to check the catalog for location and status (to see if it is not checked out).  New Books might be on the new books shelf as you enter the library, in the stacks, checked out, or at the binders.  New book titles (in general) can be browsed on the CATALOG tab of the  library’s homepage; you can also browse new films under the FILM tab.

I’ve been collecting films on the Oscar Shortlist.

ORDER RECOMMENDATIONS
Recommend a book or video purchase by emailing me.    Let me know if I can create a list of titles on a particular subject for you.   Remember that our collection development policy stipulates that we do not purchase core texts assigned for classes.  Also, many more books are available in digital format; let me know if you prefer an e-book format. If you’ve published a book or chapter I would be interested in purchasing it for our collection.  Funds will be available the week of June 1st.

DATABASE UPDATES

  • Argos:  Argos currently is in beta development The library will switch over to the improved interface after the semester ends.

  • Ithacan archive:  will be migrating from the Olive platform to the Digital Commons by July 31st (added 5/19/17).
  • Polling the Nations: will have 1 user rather than 4 simultaneous users (added 5/19/17).

ICSM
If you’re teaching an Ithaca Seminar in Fall 2017, I would like the opportunity to present library basic skills to the first year students based on an online library research guide you can link to in Sakai.  I’ll be in attendance at the library session of the ICSM workshop on May 19th where my colleague will present our Student Learning Outcomes Appropriate for First Year Students.

LIBRARY INSTRUCTION / RESEARCH CONSULTATIONS
Thanks for referring students to me for Research Consultations and inviting me to your classes.   I’m always open to visiting classes this Summer or Fall.  Let me know if you’d like a library research guide designed for your class or event.

CATHY: ON VACATION late May;  AT CONFERENCE late June
I’ll be on vacation the week of May 22nd to May 31st.  I’ll be at the American Library Association conference from June 22nd to  June 27th.  Other than that, I’ll be in the library.  You can check to see when the library is open in the summer by using our calendar.   If you need help while I’m away, try our Ask a Librarian page.

Enjoy your Summer!

Library News: LexisNexis Academic will be replaced by Nexis Uni interface by the end of 2017

TO:  Faculty
FROM:  Cathy Michael, IC Library
DATE: 1/26/17 emailed; 4/21/17 posted to blog
IN RE:  LexisNexis Academic will be replaced by Nexis Uni interface by the end of 2017 (as per the vendor)
Dear Faculty:
I am forwarding an alert that was sent to subscribers of LexisNexis Academic (information directed to librarians was edited out).
Sincerely,
Cathy

The new product, called Nexis Uni, will replace the current LexisNexis Academic product.  …The new product will be released to students this summer.   Click here:  http://www.lexisnexis.com/en-us/products/nexis-uni.page to see more information...

When Nexis Uni is released this summer to students, access will be via IP authentication for campus-wide access.  Students will be encouraged to register for an ID and password to take advantage of the personalization features of the new product.  They can self-register, so no library staff needs to be involved to manage that process.

The current LexisNexis Academic interface will be replaced by the new product by the end of 2017.  LexisNexis plans to migrate students over the summer, and at least before the beginning of the fall semester (August).  The migration is mandatory.  Libraries will be using the current academic product until the migration occurs. The current academic product will be retired at the end of December of this year.

IC Library News: ARGOS interface update expected May 13th

This summer, the Library will be migrating to a more advanced and modern system allowing us to manage our resources much more effectively and provide better service to the Ithaca College community. The migration brings about a few changes in the ways we serve content in Argos, our library search engine.

On May 13, 2017, Argos will be updated with a new look-and-feel. It is the same content, just a different way of searching and displaying our holdings. We currently have the beta version running on our site, if you would like to check it out ( bit.ly/ArgosNewUI ). Feedback is welcome!

We’ll be creating some help guides so patrons can get comfortable with the new display. Look for these soon!

Another change happening on May 13th, is that access to the legacy catalog search (our search interface before Argos) will no longer be available. Since we are moving to a new system, the current system that powers this search will no longer be available. Due to this, links to items in our catalog will also be affected. If you have linked to any of our current Argos or legacy catalog items directly, the links will cease to function at the end of August. You will need to relink to those items after August 29 when their new URLs become available in Argos. Any items that are saved using the My Shelf feature will not be carried over after August 29. We will provide instructions for exporting your saved items before the end of the semester. My own research guides, which contain numerous links to books, will be affected by this change as well.  I’ll do my best to update them as soon as I can.  Please alert me to any broken links in Fall of 2017.

If you have any questions as to the clarity of this change, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Cathy
