Re: Welcome Back! Fall 2017
Here are some updates along with some of the usual news:

- LIBRARY SYSTEM CHANGES: This summer the library has been working on replacing Voyager, the system that controls our inventory, ordering, and loans. Our current system will go down this Friday, August 11th. Our go-live date for Alma, the new system, is August 24th. You may notice some small changes to Argos, the library’s search engine, but for the most part this change will be invisible to users. Be aware that there may be delays in processing and ordering items for the rest of August. Reserves may be processed more slowly than usual as we have to wait to get the new system up and running, and item statuses may not be correct (for example, items that appear to be in the library may in fact be checked out). We hope everything will be back to normal by the beginning of classes, but it is possible there will be some backlogs or other complications, so please bear with us while we complete the switch. If you have any questions about the change, how it might impact you, or have specific questions about ordering or reserves during this time, please email me.
- ICSM Faculty: If you are teaching an ICSM course this Fall I’m booking sessions. Based on feedback from the ICSM workshop in May, all librarians will be teaching a standard program that focuses on library student learning objectives (SLOs) for search strategies. We can add a second instruction session later in the semester for more in depth searching (open search session, researching for an assignment, etc.) I’ll send those of you on my list a separate email with additional details.
Book a library instruction session for your class. Instruction sessions can be arranged at any time over the course of the semester; they are most effective after students have research topics. I can demonstrate our databases and search techniques and / or have a research session where I’m available to answer specific research questions. The format is flexible and can include a hands-on assignment. The duration is also flexible — I’ve visited classes ranging from 15 minutes to 90 minutes. There are two ways to accomplish this: 1) send me an email with the where and when of the class visit along, or 2) fill out the following form: Request for Library Instruction.
Research Guides for Sakai or your course website
Here is a Complete List of the Guides I’ve created. Consider adding one to your Sakai page. Contact me if you would like a Research Guide for your class — this can be for a production class. This can be done even if you do not have class time for a library instruction session.
Given the concern over “fake news”, take a look at our guide on Evaluating Resources. You can assign a quizz on this topic to reinforce the lesson to emphasize and develop critical thinking skills. Evaluating Resources is a part of our Research 101 skills series.
- Gannett Newsstand (ProQuest) has been removed; we have access to the Ithaca Journal and top newspapers via U.S. Newsstream on the ProQuest platform beginning August 1. You can read more about it here: http://www.proquest.com/products-services/nationalsnews_shtml.html
- Black Newspapers has been removed; much of the content can be found in Ethnic Newswatch.
- LexisNexis Academic will soon become Nexis Uni. You can look over their support and training site: https://www-lexisnexis-com.ezproxy.ithaca.edu/en-us/support/nexis-uni/default.page & sign up for training.

Our budget dates for spending are:

- 100% by March 15th

The library uses Sakai for E-reserves. Ben Hogben, Access Services Manager, put together a guide on Course Reserves in Sakai to get you started: http://www.ithacalibrary.com/sp/subjects/Sakai You can do it yourself, or, our Access Services Department can assist you. Note that it takes 24 hours for materials placed on Reserves to appear in ARGOS.
Reserves Use this page to place all types of media on Reserves (audio, journal articles and book chapters, book or score, and video clips).
Multimedia Request If you would like to show a library video on a particular date, use this form to book a film for class.
