Hey #TwIthaca: Friends at Standing Rock could use your help

[email from Maura Stephens with a note to share out]

Friends at Standing Rock have been sending updated lists of what’s needed; the long list is below.

We will be packing up a truck on Tuesday (Election Day, Nov. 8) and driving it out, leaving early Wednesday morning. We would love help packing at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca around noon, GIAC around 2:00, and Ithaca College around 4:00 on Tuesday. We don’t have the wherewithal to coordinate volunteers, so please just show up with work gloves and a dolly if you have one.

Amazon gift cards are great (here’s the Sacred Stone Camp’s online Amazon Wish List, where you can buy a gift card; your gift will go directly to Standing Stone Camp), as are Lowe’s and Menard’s gift cards, as there are Lowe’s and a Menard’s nearby, but NOT other stores like Home Depot. You can send those with us if you like.

All cash we receive will go toward buying gas for the truck; firewood (in desperate need) closer to the area so we don’t accidentally bring in any invasive bugs or viruses; propane, which we’ll also buy nearby so as not to endanger everything and everyone else driving out there; building supplies; and other items that we are told by the locals are needed.

THREE GENEROUS GROUPS HAVE OFFERED TO SERVE AS DONATION CENTERS in Ithaca:

The First Unitarian Society of Ithaca, corner of Buffalo and Aurora Streets, which is taking donations Thursday, Friday, and Monday 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Sunday after church services. Park on Buffalo Street and go in the smaller entrance. See Mark Pedersen in the office; he’ll show you where to leave donations

Greater Ithaca Activities Center, 301 W. Court St., taking donations MONDAY 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and TUESDAY 9:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

and Ithaca College Campus Center Lobby (across from the Info Desk on the 2nd floor, so upstairs from the parking lot),which is taking donations 8:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. MONDAY and 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. TUESDAY

A huge thank you to all three places!

We also have drop-off sites in Allegany and Yates Counties. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to secure donation centers in Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, or Chemung Counties, although homeowners in Tioga and Steuben can take small items. Get in touch with Maura, mstephens@ithaca.edu, 607-589-7302 if it’s easier for you to drop off in Dundee, Spencer, Bath, or Belfast.

There is NO NEED FOR “WARM CLOTHING” UNLESS IT’S SUB-ZERO ready and waterproof. We canNOT accept any coats or sweaters unless the latter are extra-good quality and made of WOOL; ditto blankets (that’s what our Sioux friends specifically requested).
