ITHACA, NY — Filmmakers Paul Mariano and Kurt Norton will screen and discuss their documentary “These Amazing Shadows: The Movies That Make America” at Ithaca College on Tuesday, March 5. The 6 p.m. showing in Park Hall Auditorium is free and open to the public.
“These Amazing Shadows” tells the history and importance of theNational Film Registry, a listing of movies deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant, and therefore worthy of preservation by the Library of Congress. The current list of over 575 films reflects the diversity of the medium — and of the American experience itself — including selections from every genre: documentaries, home movies, Hollywood classics, avant-garde, newsreels and silent films.
This is the second film that Mariano and Norton have worked on together. It features interviews with such notables as directors Christopher Nolan, John Waters and Amy Heckerling; actors Tim Roth, John Singleton and Debbie Reynolds; and critics Leonard Maltin and Mick LaSalle.
