Opening General Session featuring Dan Savage Friday, 06/24/2011 – 4:00pm – 5:15pm Convention Center – Auditorium, Opening/Closing session, Speaker series
Last summer the nation was rocked by a spate of gay teen suicides: youths who took their own lives because of bullying. Determined to do something, Dan Savage realized that the era of social media gave him the means to speak to them directly as never before. On September 22, 2010, Dan and his husband Terry Miller uploaded a video to YouTube, where they spoke openly about the bullying they suffered as teenagers—and how they both went on to lead rewarding adult lives, filled with joy, family, and love. They encouraged friends and colleagues to speak out and upload their own videos. 24 hours later, the second video was uploaded. By end of the week, they’d received over 1,000 videos. Less than a month later, Dan received a call from the White House: President Obama himself had made a video., Six months later, www.itgetsbetter.org has evolved into a nonprofit organization and a national movement, with over 10,000 videos and growing, from people all over the country, including The Salt Lake City Library, Free Philadelphia Public Library, politicians such as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and celebrities like Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, and many more. , The book IT GETS BETTER: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living, edited by Dan Savage and Terry Miller. , , , DAN SAVAGE is the author of the syndicated column, “Savage Love,” and the Editorial Director of The Stranger, Seattle’s weekly newspaper. Information seekers turn to the Web and social media for instant access, but often lack the critical skills to evaluate their findings. Nonetheless, speed and convenience too often trump accuracy. Three key communities share a common interest in quality information: libraries, journalists, and educators. What if these sectors work together in informal networks to raise awareness of libraries as sources of reliable information? Through collaboration, can these communities raise information literacy, enhance critical thinking skills, and make fact-finding an engaging, transformative, learning adventure? Explore the possibilities with Bill Densmore (career journalist and organizer of Beyond Books), Mike Fancher (Reynolds Chair in the Ethics of Entrepreneurial and Innovative Journalism at the University of Nevada), and Nancy Kranich (past president of ALA and organizer of Beyond Books). Co-sponsored by The ALA Center for Public Life.
